A hair make over.

Back2myroots : A place to share thoughts and grow idea's. B2MR

A make over can make such a difference to a client.
It can change how they look and feel about them selves It can change how they act and relate to others.

Our role as a stylist is to offer sound advise offer solutions be creative. But we must always consider what we have to work with and on.
Remember it's scissors or a razor it's not a wand! consider the clients features hair type life style.
Its called the consultation. It's when we communicate  we listen we use our professional skills. Our time to shine.

This model young women came into the salon she was very heavily pregnant and stressed. She asked could would any one cut her hair off . Well i stood back and watched as things played out in the salon.
As follows:
The receptionist was concerned that the women was asking for a hair cut on impulse being so pregnant.
She asked members of staff who were free if they would like to cut this ladies hair both looked her up and down and said No saying she should not be doing this she cannot have thought it through.
Well think I make over time seeing this woman who said she had tried 3 other salons and been turned away .A challenge I would be happy to work with you on a new look. When is your baby due it's late she says I'm having it tomorrow!!! Ok then lets sit you down and have a chat!!
During the consultation it was agreed  that half measures was not going to work. She had long hair but leaving it long enough to tie back would just create more work and be boring. She agreed to trust me.I explained that i don't use scissors only a razor and off we went.

Now remember 39 weeks pregnant  oh and this shot taken with an old polaroid camera that i still keep handy .So lots of hair and a fringe or as bangs to work around. let the make over begin!!

Same day same model same clothes! just a touch of lip stick and a new look !! what do you think?

I was very happy with the look! New Mum to be cried she was so happy. Other clients in the salon Gob smacked at the change!! Easy to manage dry with her fingers .She had the baby the next day a little girl.
She called me some weeks later to thank me again for the change and the look. What we do is just so worth while we can change lives. We can make a difference. One client at a time.

Salon service . That bit extra

Back2myroots : A place to share thoughts and grow idea's. B2MR

A true story relayed to me of an experience.

A friend was growing out her hair but like so may women new that part of this process was regular maintenance a trim.  although the model in the picture is not the one in the case example provided the issue was the same and addressed to correct.

Having booked an appointment at the salon a well known and much respected establishment the day arrive she arrived at the salon and met her stylist . Explaining that she was growing out her her and layer and only wanted trim.

The young stylist went ahead and started cutting quite large amount seemed to be coming off up on  completion the result was a re layered much to short cut .
What to do leaving the salon trying to put on a brave face not wishing to make a fuss! This happens oh so often.
Before I carry on. I raise the question Consultation listening to the clients wants. Maybe doing what they request!  Is it that hard?

Upon getting home and seeking advise from a friend. It was decided to call the salon and ask to speak to the manager A call was put through to the receptionist  who although helpful said the manager is out today But here is her home number!  Odd thinks i does this happen a lot?

At the friend rather loathed to call and bother manager home but then thinking hey they gave me the number. So full of courage and still upset the call is made.

The Manager could not have been more helpful and concerned. Offering full refund instantly but also wanting an opportunity to right this wrong! Suggesting a different salon with a very experienced stylist to try and sort this out.
A new appointment booked this new stylist went out of his way to resolve the issues a re cut and change of style was the only way forward. But very attentive and professional and caring .the out come armed with a new look not planned, but so much happier with some complimentary products she left much happier. So the salon refunded. Re did and offered token of products.
Out come wil she go back ,to the first stylist no never the the second stylist and the salon chain yes.
I client served and saved .This is a fine example of customer service and great salon policyIt should not have happened in the first place but it did but so more importantly they took responsibility and sort to resolve the issue.
Well done the salon and the manager who are they AXIS Vancouver BC Canada.

We can all learn a great deal from this example of addressing a situation taking control and putting the clients needs and interests first.  Service. Consultation.Communication. skill.

Hair stylist's. Are we the product? we offer service

Back2myroots : A place to share thoughts and grow idea's. B2MR

I find the more I write and think about topic's to keep my little blog up to date and interesting. The more I reflect on. What it means to me! what I can offer! What can I share to keep them current and interesting:

In working through this thought process it brings me back to the key point of what we all do and offer service.
Yes it's skill it's knowledge it's communication but none of this matters if we don't offer. Good service and good value for money service. Value for money does not mean discount or cheap just value.
What is the product we market?
It's our skill, creativity, knowledge. ability to listen to communicate, honesty,
Oh yes and that all important consultation.

We are in the business of offering advise we are also specialist in solving problems!
So we are in a very unique business.
We have a wonderful opportunity to use the many skills gained, utilise the tools at our disposal to do our job to apply our trade. We have the ability to turn a bad day into a good day from disaster into success powerful stuff.
We have to think of ourselves as being totally unique in the service we offer and the skill we have for we are all different we all react in different ways this does not mean we are not part of a team and as such should not share thoughts idea's we just all have something different to offer a different way of doing things.
The way we present our selves the appearance we project are all part of the personal image package that  is 'I' or 'You' this initial presentation is very important for it say this is me this is who i am!!!

So what are we selling what are we promoting:
This is easy we sell. Ourselves our skill and talent. Creativity. We are expert in the business of creating image a look experts in finding solutions to problems having answers to question.
Because we are all so very different and as such offer our trade in our own unique way none of us will suite everyone personality issues conflict will always exist so when it happens don't take it to heart it only becomes personal if you let it! [ so be the bigger person ] a little humility is ok this does not make you a door mat.
Something we as stylist also need to at least be aware of  as gain success get busy get a reputation is Ego just keep it in check a little ego is healthy but to much..............! not so good.
So to be a good communicator a problem solver what tools do we need? Knowledge is the key here!
Knowledge is power.
With so many different products on the market especially with hair colour both professional and home kits and now an onslaught of new Nano technology [ this new hip term} prior to this every thing was multifaceted, What ever the wording the lingo we have be on top of it we have to be up to date with new products new formulations. How and why they work. How do we do this ?
Education, training up dates, sharing, and by asking questions?? Thing some of us are not so good at!
Remember this the only stupid question is the one we don't ask!
Be informed have knowledge be a problem solver not a problem maker!
As always thoughts comments idea's please,
Mike

To this ends we are given the challenge some time to correct badly coloured hair this could be from either a poor professional job or a hope colour gone wrong.
Colour correction is a skill knowing how to re-balance a pigment mantle as a stylist only embark on this if you have the skill and knowledge to take on the responsibility. As a client work with choose some one you trust for this journey. Also get an estimate of both cost and timing for said correction. have a consultation be informed.
As a follow on from yesterdays posting after correction care:

Post Home Haircoloring Tips:
[Above pretty bad almost green hair! ]
                                                                        before shot

Recommendations post-colour tips:

It is recommended to wait 48 hours before washing your hair again after the initial color treatment is completed.  This gives new hues time to settle.
Always shampoo with lukewarm water.  Hot water will speed up color fading.
Use hair products specifically designed to protect coloured hair get professional advise.  Remember that some shampoo products designed to add volume will actually “blow up” the cuticle and thus cause hues to fade much faster.  Use products that are specifically labeled as “colour safe”
Shampoo less often.  Even permanent colors will fade faster with frequent washings.
Avoid the use of hot styling tools as much as possible.  Heat from either appliances or the sun will speed up color loss. When possible, air dry coloured strands.
When out in the sun or when swimming in a pool hats! Sun, surf, sand all the S things and pool chemicals may leach out precious tones or in some cases, cause color to fade or even worse, turn brassy or odd shades of green or orange.
Treat colored hair with care and respect invest in good quality products that work within your budget   and remember to deep condition on a regular basis to counteract dryness.
Resist the urge to recolor again before at least 2 weeks has passed.  Remember, less is more.
Avoid any other chemical processes for at least one month.  Keep in mind that perms or chemical straightening procedures may cause hair colors to be altered.
I would always recommend doing a skin test prior to any application it's always best to be safe.

                                                          {Above make over from above shot}
With some though sight and thinking it is possible to go from a muddy sludge to vibrant colour just takes time and patients:

In Closing:
If you plan on becoming a home hair colour jockey, consider starting a special journal or notebook so you can write down a record of each treatment.  Note the products that you used and the results.Over time you may discover little tricks that make your colouring techniques more streamlined or successful.
I hope this guide is helpful and saves some of the pit falls that can happen when entering the world of home hair colour and correction if required.

Hair colour product. Information review..

Back2myroots :  A place to share thoughts and grow idea's. B2MR.

Discussion sharing thoughts and views:

Smoke and mirrors:

In a recent exchange of thoughts with a fellow industry professional we were sharing thoughts and comments around policy and what is accepted as common place with professional hair colour manufactures. The practice of deploying clever marketing tactics to promote products in some cases cases certain Ingredients are promoted whilst others are disguised or played down.
In some cases companies work on the assumption that the majority of users or consumers do not know any difference when the topic of ingredients are raised and their short / long term effect.

We as stylist colour technicians hairdressers owe it to our selves and our clients to be well informed and try to educate our clients on this subject. We cannot do this unless we ourselves stay current and educated.
In the same exchange of views. The issue was raised as to training knowledge of stylists and interest in products ingredients it was suggested that. Many hairdressers and colorists do not consider internal knowledge of ingredients an issue, it was also suggested that for a few. Performance is key and most stylists are content to be part of an industry that  revolves around beauty and creating beautiful color, and the reality of our business is generating results that provide a complimentary service for which people pay a premium.
My view on this is that whilst I agree with this in principle . But don't see how. Being informed and educated. Being able to inform clients openly about any given product would or should effect our creative talent. clients who are paying a premium should be doing so in the knowledge that the person doing the creative work is well informed and educated and not just using products that some corporate entity or large manufacturer has produced a slick advertising campaign for.

It was also pointed out to me that our lives are touched daily with ingredients that would shock most. However this is a commercial world we live in and is based on reality. Does this mean we should not question does this mean we just have to accept it? I hope not. I think not. Transparence inspires trust!
Manufacturers share technologies and ingredients and their resources are limited to what is tried, tested and approved by the cosmetic federations governing safety and usability.

This was and is not the point products that are tested  and certified as safe can be changed when certain elements come together also many ingredients are disguised and represented if different ways.
I am only saying we as professionals have a right to question and decide. We should not assume everything written on the box is gospel. Manufactures and corporate concerns should hold professional stylist in higher regard when it's comes to standards of knowledge and education.
In Closing we can as stylist change this attitude of need to know bases education, demand transparency of chemistry and ingredients and effects from manufacturing by questioning becoming educated ourselves and of course most importantly by use!

It is through. Asking questions. Raising issue. Communication. That we can instigate change with both colour companies. Honest. Open discussions all will lead to professional having access to products with a chemistry they can trust.
This same discussion I believe forced many of the companies producing Keratin based smoothing products. The Initial fears about formaldehyde having been addressed to satisfy both stylist's and clients.
On this topic I have written to a company producing a smoothing product fro more information.
I await a response.

The salon growing your business. Recommendation. Retention.

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR:
Regular postings of fresh new topic's

As Salon owner's and Manager Stylist's.
We all have one major things in Common. Do you know what that is ? We all work in the service Industry. It is our job to offer the highest standards of. Service and Consultation.
This is a team effort an experience that starts as the client walks through the door and is greeted by receptionist and salon assistance. As stylists to offer the best advise supported by knowledge and skill.
On going training product knowledge updates are all key factors to staying current and on the cutting edge of our industry.

It is a know fact. That 50% of clients that visit a salon for the first time do not return! Why is this? What is going wrong? We all spend so much time money and energy trying to get new business. We forget about the existing business. We forget to live in the now! Striving and Trying to build up a strong clientele. But constantly driven to look for new clients new ways to attract clients.
We need to take an honest look at what is going wrong. This has to be done both as. A Salon as a team and as an individual.

Clients leave for many reason's. Poor service. Bad job. Personality issues. Pricing. Oh and a friend telling them about the new wonder salon down the road. That being everything yours is not!

In all of the above instances the only one person who cannot be blamed is. The client. It is our job to cherish care and build up a trusting honest relationship. One that comes for giving the ultimate service.
Change improvements. Salon service. Image. Increased business all possible but it does take. Hard work, Humility, Honesty and caring.

Here is a little personal reflection. But it get's a point home.

I recently lost my dear life friend my dog Zip. Stay with me there is a point to this! He was almost 10 years old. 3 years ago we moved to the Uk from Canada leaving my clients and hair business behind.

I have stayed in touch with many of my clients will still chat stay connected. It's easy! How? With so many Media tools available to us. Well I learned a huge lesson in Zip's passing sad as it was. How loved and how many clients remembered him. The salon. The service. So many postings with messages from people who's hair I have not done for three years. But they still care they still remember the time we spent together.  They left message s reflecting on this time spent. Why? Because they wanted to. Because they cared. Because we had built up relationships still strong today.

Service Consultation the key.
We get so wrapped up in booking. Being busy. Fitting in as many clients as possible. That we forget that the person that client in the chair is the most important thing. Think less about the money more about the service for one takes care of the other.
Look after that client give the most attentive service make them feel special she will tell friend and so it builds.
Easy just repeat the same system over and over treat every client the same every time as if it were a first visit and they are really special. Fool proof!
Service .Consultation. Communication. Professional product advise. note not sales advise educate the product it will sell it self.

Do you take the time to really listen and give honest advise?
Would you suggest a different look ? If what was being requested would not look good?
Would you suggest not doing a chemical process if you thought condition to poor?
Would you stay late working with a client until happy?
Have boundaries a 15 min rule for lateness no exception ! why it's easy the knock on effect over the day creates you running late others being effected.
You see both clients and us as stylist have to be accountable for our actions. Make a decision live with the consequences. Mutual respect. Open lines of communication.
Give sound solid honest advise even if it's not what the clients wants to hear. Do not take on work that is not represent your own high standards and explain why?
More to follow on this topic but enough to digest for now.
For further places to research on going help and advise some very useful links below online support program for you your salon and team.

Bad hair! ? low standards. Unprofessional!

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR regular postings of fresh new topic's

If it's a bad look done at home it's sad. If it's a bad look and not very well executed cut style or colour done professionally that's even worse.
Why is it? how is some people can go out without looking in the mirror and being honest asking the question. Does this look good?
As stylist we need to remember that a client leaving the salon is our walking promotion. It's a free walking bill board or the reason why your not getting recommended. Standards creative skill. consultation with clients about what will work!
below some examples of bad looks and why!
over processed candy cane hair bleached within an inch of it's life shapeless hair cut looking like she stuck a finger in a electric socket! would you be proud of this creation?

When you see bad hair out in public do you ever think? What was going through the person mind who created that? Or do they know how bad that looks? Did they pay for that?  I do it amazes me what stylist's can do produce that is deemed acceptable. How low standards can get. What poor standards people will accept as looking good !

The same can be said for dress sense looking in the mirror and thinking maybe not! Or for me this hair do is wrong on so many levels. Its shape well lack of ! Its colour. In this case a stylist has taken three looks and tried to join them together very badly.

I'm not sure if the nape and the nasty line there .The crown and that flat bald like area . Or the weight line carried round to the sides and face. It's just wrong on all levels.
Oh! Perfect a side view to show off what I am trying to point out! No flow. Disconnection it not an excuse for total shapeless mess. The crown area is two short and blunt . Cutting hair short does not create height! or volume. Texture does with shears or a razor and an understanding of weight shape and form, well that and styling.

This to me looks like she turned her head up side down and blasted it with a hairdryer. Sadly the shape or lack there of does allow for a lazy styling approach .The blonde is a nothing colour dull patchy leopard spotting caused by over layering coloured area's. No thought has been given to shape look or colour not to mentions the clients features and dress sense or lack of.
This is all a classic example of not caring and low standards. In this instance. The stylist not only let's the client down but also them selves for it is no advert  to produce work like this.

Want more? Ok How about this look:

What does this say to you? Would you produce this ? Would you be proud to say this totally represents my work and who I am ?  Hum not so much ha!
Again really bad choice of colours and look. Whether the client did this her self or paid for it .Well it's a rat's nest. Why do people go out looking like this. Because they really take very little time to think does this look good ! do I feel good! If your a stylist looking at this say to your self I am better than this ! If you are  a client then say! From now on I will take time to make an effort to look and feel good.

In closing It is possible to see a look that works that is well done I think that it was the  contrast of these three women all taken at the same location that set this topic in motion.

For me this is a well executed little cut. A really well done colour it work and suites the women. I hope this brings my point home that as stylist's we have to consider so much not just a hair do. we have to work with and cater for all sorts and types!
But life style. The way the client looks. What she wears. Does she really care about appearance. Some women don't getting a hair cut or colour is just a routine event,We have the skill and ability to make a difference to open their eye's
Where does all this start With the image we present and the service  the consultation the honest sound advise we offer. can you do you do this ? Do you really care? Don't be any thing other than the very best you can. Never settle for second best as a Stylist or as a client.
We attract what we project and present that look that say's this is me. Or as a stylist's it says. This is what i can do for you. Standards never let them slip !!!! Mike B2MR

The hair salon. Up selling or sound advise

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR: Regular postings of fresh new topic's

How many Salon owners managers and stylist's struggle with the concept of up selling to a client. So many fear the 'S' word sales. Be it the recommendation of take home hair care products or the suggestion of chemical service. Why is this an issue? A client comes to us for change. They come to us either recommended or as a returning client. This shows trust. So is it not our obligation to suggest services that we feel will improve the look and style.
Is it not the case that. We are not offering that full service if we don't offer. Advise on other services available and options to improve both look and style and self esteem.
The thing to consider and the way to look at things is it's not selling. It's sharing with your client options and possibilities. If  you are doing it from a place of caring and sharing .That place that has your clients best interest at heart it's not heavy selling it called' Service' If you genuinely think this will improve your clients look and style and so how they feel about themselves job done.
How do you time and introduce this suggested change without your client feeling obligated or without creating that uncomfortable unease caused by the suggestion. Simple yes Simple! Do you know how?
Its called a.                                                             'Consultation'
Maybe by looking at the consultation process we can get past any fears around the sales pitch.

what should this experience for our client be this person who we want to build a relationship with this person the we hope will recommend us and the salon for the service and skill we provide and offer.

The Service the consultation: The keys to success.
From the moment a client enters into a salon the experience begins those first impressions the look the feel of the place the atmosphere.
That first greeting. That welcome normally carried out by receptionist or a salon staff member who job is to meet and greet. This is a hugely important role if given this role. Don't turn it down it's a way to hone your people skills.
With new clients some salon will have a questionnaire. This is great for both stylist and client it show the salon cares it puts the client at ease whilst waiting for her appointment maybe whilst having a coffee or tea.
From a stylist point of view it gives us back ground information so we can ask the right questions during our consultation. Without information how can we give sound advise. this opens the door for us to see past history of hair services and the possibility of offering new service.
Once this has been filled out as a stylist I think it's important to come a meet your client introduce your self to the client you should already know your clients name this should be on your personal day agenda sheet. if this is not the case in your salon introduce it! 'Now'
[Yes a list of clients for the day the service they are hoping for and whether they are new or return or recommend clients]  Because with out having a consultation all the facts how can we decide what is possible !! we cannot.
Trust me when I say this.  I have seen many stylist work out their days take {£ $ } before the day starts.
I have worked with one stylist. Who would get into work look at the day sheet and get all the tubes of colour out for that day putting them aside.  god help any one who touched this colour I made a point of using it !!! well no ones perfect ! How could you possible know what a client wants in advance of them coming in? much less taking the time to talk with them. How boring ! well this stylist was really very boring. Personality of a  dead nat !!!
So back to the plot
First impression count how you look and present your self says who you are its all about the image you project your dress hair makeup! That look that says this is me! what can I do for you?
We have introduced our self. Escort our client though to our work station. This area is represents who you are. How you work. Untidy dirty chaos does not work!
With the clip board on your lap sit next to your client. Remember  eye level. eye contact. Remember you have some information to hand so use it.
Not! what are we doing today ! 'How about'
I see from the information you have kindly filled you you had a hair cut 6 weeks ago. How has that been working out for you. How manageable have you found it as it's grown out. That leads into what brings you here today how can I help all leading open ended questions.
This now leaves the door open for easy conversation you have relaxed your client you are starting to build trust.
Personal routine, products used, if chemical service has been carried out on the hair even if not being re done on this occasion it still needs to be touched on for future booking and for advice and comment
Never ever! Put a colour chart on a clients lap and say. What colour do you want today! It's your job our job as professionals to advise on colour that can work and look stunning.
This is the up sell without the hard sell!
Having established History and indeed wish list we can move on the recommendations.
Style . Look . Length . Colour . Products styling tips maintenance. Be honest  at all times. I like to refer to a relationship as taking a journey together that with patients honesty open the doors to endless possibilities.
There is such a difference between a quick pre shampoo chat and a real genuine caring consultation?
Of course there will always be slight differences in the process and peoples expectation and what they demand .That is why we chose to be in the service industry. The question being are you are you ready for the challenge to make some changes to how you do your consultation advise your client? To seek out some help advise and guidance if required. Do you want to gain the skills to really succeed and reach new levels of success.
In closing having a fully booked day is what most stylist long for strive for. Consistently busy. But consider this. When fully booked or over booked we lose clients ! Why however good we are the standard of service drops.
Your fault no one else to blame ! You took short cuts kept clients waiting. You sacrificed your standards for a few extra £££ or $$$$.
Do this and you do more damage a dissatisfied  client will go else where taking her friends with her! it's Service, reliability, Service consultation, Service, skill oh and More Service!!!.
It's all about Balancing your day so you have the time to suggest and offer these new services. work with your team mates. Colour technician space your appointments so you have time to offer and perform new services. Don't worry or think about the £££££ or $$$$$ this will follow concentrate on the job in hand your client and the service you offer.

The up sell is not an up sell it's offering your professional skill and knowledge to your clients to enhance and improve their look! That's what they come to you for!   Having suggested change if they don't fancy it . no big deal make a note on file discussed with client . Maybe they want time to think about it you have planted a seed for next time! hence the note's.
Product sales home after care. How can it not be right to suggest the products required to maintain both condition and a look? How can it not be right to suggest product that will help keep a colour from fading? Think of it as a prescription for healthy hair .maybe even go so far as to write down what they need and require!

We are in the service industry sales through education and skill is not direct selling it's part of the service it 's part of what we do.
Practice all of the above and watch. Your sales improve. Your client base grow your client retention be solid. Your wage packet ! Well that's in your hands

Hair colour case review: Solid colour to High lights.

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR:
Regular postings of fresh new topic's

Well this past week end was crunch time.
I have been colouring my wife's hair a solid colour for quite a while. I have played with shades and tones and formulations. As we all know a colour can and will look different just by using a different level of developer.
Well sadly the Grey is creeping in. The re growth is appearing quicker and the depth of deposit and so longevity of vibrancy was getting lost.
Time to think a little lighter. Time to think high lights and low lights a mixture of shades. being the long term goal.
As you can see below: When first done this colour looks rich warm healthy looking:

Well I knew and know from experience this is not a quick or easy task, nor can one take short cuts!  No not because it's my wife although that plays a part! But because this colour and so degree of deposit has built up over time so to get an even lift  down the full shaft of  hair i would have to start lifting from the ends in running a couple of different formulation.
I like to use papers for high lighting and find the best ones that don't slip and will stay right up to the root without bleeding are Hi Lit Wraps By W.R Rayson. They come in various sizes are waxed paper so bio degrade with time. I will post a link at the end of Article.

Although an older shot from my archive: This shot below gives a very good example of the issues being faced. Roots and faded washed out colour.

I decided on my course of action my goal was to lift to a golden blonde at this time so that in the future we can high light and low light still adding some warm shades. But for now it's breaking up a solid colour but with even lift. Fine highlights and low lights.
I would run 20 vol bleach decolouriser from end to mid lengths and 10 vol decolouriser mid lengths for now no root application for they will lift and go to light to quickly.
Once applied i left them on with visual timing as the correct shade was reached so i took them out a rinsed with water. Once this was complete and I was happy with the shade the full head was rinsed really well and then dried off.
Now a root assessment  to blend them in the lift achieved i Decided on two formulations her natural level is 7 but around 7G  so i used a 9N with 20 vol for the roots 1 part colour 1 1/2 developer  knowing the violet under tone would control anything to yellow This was applied only to the roots / regrowth.

Formulation.
I also used a Demi formulation of 9B for deposit only just to add a burnt honey tone through the newly lightened hair. so yes i put in a second set of high lights over the first but ended up with target shade and colour no banding and even lift. Taking us on the road to a lighter all over effect without it look yellow dull or drab.

The 9B has a green base at a level 9. So when applied over the existing copper it will neutralise to some degree thus creating a burnt honey tone. controlling the copper.
The process:
From now on it will be some lift with a low volume bleach decolouriser and some low lights of different shades depending on time of year . Less root issue and multi tonal shades for life and texture.

As promised here is some contact for the Hi Lite wraps.I am in the Uk and have found them very helpful with regard to service.
hi lite wraps at work right to root

This collection of shots is to show the advantages of the Hi lite wraps the model in shot was having blonde high lights this is not part of the discussed above colour process. These wraps are so easy to use very light and fold over very easily. They are easy to manage when sliding them in to the roots clean neat section's is the key working off of sections working with the shape and curve of the head and always taking into account the hair line and growth patterns.
When removing they pull out with ease with out snagging or any discomfort to the client.
many papers very neat to work with.

right to roots no bleeding

For any one interested in the Hi-Lite wraps. I have also found this company so helpful they are based in the United states who knows maybe we can get them into the UK or Global.

Trace elements Metallic salts in hair products

Welcome to BACK2MYROOTS B2MR
Created as a source of advise education knowledge skill experience a place to share thoughts post comments and idea's on matters relating to hair colouring skill and techniques and anything industry related.

Do we really know what we are getting
In that wonder box of home hair colour!

It is my intention to shed some light and expose some truth around some of the nasty things found in hair colour chemicals that go unmentioned causing effects that can be dangerous!
Understanding how and why certain chemical reactions take place is very important. Lack of knowledge and understanding of products is no excuse when things go wrong.
Action re action: whilst doing that consultation, look, feel, ask those leading question that help you get as much history as possible.

Over view of products available:

THERE are many ways to color hair and many products which are used for coloring. The most widely used products fall into two classifica tions—permanent hair colorings and temporary or demi- semi. It is essen tial that the professional colour technician understand how the products in each group work and their effects on the hair.

HAIR COLORINGS
Permanent colorings remain in the hair until they are removed by chemical means or until the hair grows out. The coloring cannot be washed out with soap and water. However, it can be changed if another shade is desired by using a colour remover or bleach and re-tinting the hair.
Permanent colorings are used to cover gray hair, to give decided changes in hair color, or to brighten or deepen an already existing shade.
There are two types of permanent hair colorings—those that penetrate in the hair shaft and the coating tints which develop on the cuticle.
The Penetrating Tints
Almost all permanent hair coloring is done with oxidation or penetrat ing tints. These tints penetrate through the cuticle layer of the hair into the cortex and are there oxidized or developed by the peroxide to in  soluble pigments deposited on the same place where the natural pigments occur. The distribution of the produced pigments inside the hair shaft in the same pattern as the natural pigment creates a natural-looking shade.
The tinting action of the permanent hair coloring stops as soon as the hair is rinsed and excess coloring is washed away so that the hair does not darken after the application.
Hair is not overly damaged if the penetrating tint is properly applied.Sometimes the penetrating tints  can even  seem to improve hair condition.
All oxidation or penetrating tints require a patch test to be given 24 hours before each application.

The coating tints develop on the outside of the shaft on the cuticle layer, obliterating light and producing unnatural colors. There are many kinds of coating tints stains, vegetable extracts and the metallic dyes.

Vegetable Extracts
In the past, many plants and plant extracts such as indigo, sage, camomile and henna were used for hair dyeing. However, today only henna finds continued use. Among its many disadvantages are the length of application time, uncertain results, and the unnatural red shades it produces. Over a period of time, henna coats the hair and suffocates the cuticle, making other chemical services inadvisable, It is impossible to remove henna from the hair.
So-called white henna is not henna at all but is magnesium carbonate application of white henna, with its  strong alkaline reaction, tends to damage the hair.

Metal Salt Dyes and Metal Compounds
Metal salt dyes are usually composed of a solution of metal salt with thiosulfate. The metal salt dyes are called progressive dyes or color restorers, because each subsequent application increases the coating on the hair and it becomes progressively darker. These metallic dyes have a tendency to fade into peculiar colors. Those that contain lead turn purple. The dyes containing silver turn green, and those containing copper turn red.
There are some disadvantages of metallic salt dyes. There are relatively few shades of metallic hair dyes available limited by the properties of metal salts. However, the degree of color can be regulated by the frequency of application.
The more frequent the application, correspondingly the stronger the color. These dyes tend to produce quite dark and intense colors with frequent use. Metallic salt dyes can interfere with permanent waving they can and will cause a chemical reaction this can result in a heat reaction in some cases hair can dissolve or melt, so there are restrictions on using these dyes along with other forms of hair processing.{back to the stand test not done enough in salons seldom by the home hair artists.}

The advantages of metallic salt dyes if their are any! include their ease of use at home. The gradual change in color with repeated use is subtle so friends and associates may not actually realize you have started using hair dye. These dyes are relatively safe to use. Although made from metals, the modern formulas are not absorbed through the skin. There is usually no need for a patch test as it is extremely rare to become sensitized to metallic salts.

THE BIG TEST:
To determine if hair has been colored by a metallic dye, mix 1 oz. of 20-volume peroxide with 20 drops of 28% ammonia. Submerge 20 strands of hair in the solution and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. If the hair lightens rapidly, the hair contains lead. If there is no reaction after 30 minutes, the hair contains silver or bismuth. If the solution starts to boil and emits a foul odor, the hair contains copper. Hair that has no metallic salts on it should lighten only very slightly.

                                 Henna Compound Dyes
The henna compound dyes are mixtures of metallic salts with organic intermediates such as pyrogallol. The colors achieved with these com pounds are more natural looking than those obtained with the metal salts alone, but no lightening of the hair is possible and they fade easily. They are discolored by cold wave permanents, and hair treated with these compounds cannot be bleached or dyed until the metallic salts have been removed. [removing metallic salts] good luck with that!
Red Henna comes from the Dried leaves of the Privet [lawsonia alba] grown in Asia and northern Africa.
Natural henna comes from the crushed root.
Natural henna is sometimes mixed with compounds of Metallic salts to produce a range of different colours. Hair coloured with Metallic salt henna cannot and should not be coloured with any other products including Hydrogen Peroxide.
Warning :
If unsure do a strand test,[ Strong discoloration,an unpleasant smell. no colour change, uneven results down hair shaft, in some case applying permanent colour over    the top of Metallic salts can cause a high heat reaction!]
Henna can make appear shinny with more body and natural red hues depending on natural base level!
Henna Can over time build up on hair make it brittle it is not possible to chemically remove henna.
{Again before attempting any new colour strand testis essential!}

TEMPORARY HAIR COLORINGS
Temporary colorings deposit color on the outside of the hair shaft. They are generally removed by washing with soap and water, but some of the temporary types are resistant to one or two shampoos.
Temporary hair colorings are used to darken or to add highlights to normal hair, to impart color to gray hair and to eliminate yellowish shades from white and gray hair.
There are three kinds of temporary hair colorings:
Rinses
For women who want only to highlight the color of their hair or add beauty to gray hair, rinses are the most satisfactory answer. Concen trated rinses like the Clairol Come Alive series, while they wash out with soap and water, remain color true from shampoo to shampoo. The Come Alive series consists of Come Alive Gray, Come Alive Red, Come Alive Brown and Come Alive Blonde. They highlight mousy hair, and Come Alive Gray makes gray hair look more beautiful without unnatural blue and purple tones. The Come Alive rinses condition as well as color the hair. These rinses are easily and quickly applied and are valuable as an introduction to hair coloring.

 Highlighting Shampoos
Some shampoos combine the action of a rinse with that of a shampoo to give highlights and slight color tones to hair. These shampoos gen erally contain certified colors.{ some of these contain elements that build up in the hair}
Other highlighting shampoos do not contain coloring matter, but do contain a bleaching agent to achieve this effect. Their action is due to solid peroxide compounds present in a soap or detergent base.

Powders, Crayons, Mascaras, and Hair color Cremes
Powders are practically extinct today with the exception of the metallic powders which have returned to fashion for use in applying temporary hair streaks. again we are back with the metallic issues it builds up in the hair it causes chemical reactions.

Hair crayons are used to retouch newly grown gray hair in between tint treatments so that it blends with the tinted hair. The results are not  comparable to regular retouching.

Read hair color instructions carefully

when in doubt, always do a test on a small strand first. But if you've made a mistake, don't hide under a hat for months. Salons have color removers and their are some good over the counter removers B4 sold at Boots the Chemist. they will in most case take you right back to where you started, where hopefully, history won't repeat itself.

I hope that this has and is helpful good luck with your next hair adventure:            http://www.back2myroots.co.uk/
